Montreal Weekender: July 17 through 20, 2014

THURSDAY
The Fantasia Film Festival begins today with screenings until Aug. 6. Recognized as the largest and most influential event of its kind in North America and one of the country’s most popular film festivals, Fantasia offers a huge program with an emphasis on the imaginative cinema of Asia, Europe and the Americas. From unique and powerful personal visions to international commercial crowd-pleasers rarely seen in North America, this is a must-attend for any movie lover.

Rosalie Restaurant Bar, Hype Energy Drinks, AQUAhydrate and Fondation Amal are once again teaming up to bring you Cheeseburgers for Charity on Rosalie’s terrace. Guests will enjoy complimentary BBQ cheeseburgers, upbeat, inspiring music, and a positive attitude. A percentage of all liquor sales will go straight to Fondation Amal, a civic-minded charity that helps children across Quebec overcome physical and mental difficulties. Come celebrate the best that Montreal has to offer this summer while helping a local charity make the lives of our children better!

Looking to check out some seriously notable art? Roxy Peroxyde is hosting a vernissage of her kick-ass and sexy work at Old Port’s Galerie 203 tonight from 5 to 9 pm.

The Royal Merchant is back again with their Thursday Summer Party, this time featuring guest host and bartender Wilder Weir. BT Montreal’s Live Eye host will be spending an evening with the crew and guests from 6pm-10pm. Come by, say hi and cheers with Wilder and the gang. The Merchant never disappoints.

FRIDAY
The Jackalope Festival of skateboarding, fixed gear, parkour and more takes place this weekend at the esplanade outside Olympic Stadium. From July 18 to 20, the Esplanade Financière Sun Life at the Olympic Park will host local and international athletes from the skateboard, wake skate, freestyle motocross, fixed gear, parkour, slackline, and longboard scenes. The festival will also be the host of the Canadian stop for World Cup Skateboarding 2014, welcoming athletes from 10 countries. Did we mention this event is free?

Success Clothing is proud to throw another annual party tonight and this time it’s in celebration of owner Vinny Success’ 28th birthday at a brand new lounge in the heart of Montreal’s Chinatown, Luwan located at 1050 Clark. DJ Sagewondah will be mixing all the best hip-hop and R&B all night long.

From the humble beginnings of his parent’s outdoor tool shed, Mark Knight has become one of the most successful DJs and producers on the planet. Tonight he will be gracing the stage of New City Gas, performing what will most likely be one of the most epic DJ sets you’ll experience this summer.

SATURDAY
Come celebrate the launch of WRG Magazine’s new issue, Vol. 07, this Saturday, July 19th at Luwan Bar. Live from Paris, special guest CANBLASTER will be dropping the beats alongside New Money, Ledisko, Flimsey Goods and Ponsolo. Party goes from 8pm to 3am with cocktails being served until midnight. For those who are hungry, fresh dumplings will be going around until 10pm. Get fresh.

JFL’s Date Night will make you re-visit your own relationship… with humour, that is. Godfrey hosts a slew of romantically dysfunctional comedians who explore the full human mating cycle and leave no embarrassing story untold. Think of it like Animal Planet for humans.

We had such a blast last weekend at Pandore, so we decided to do it again this Saturday night! Seeing as how the weekend is calling for some of the most beautiful weather of the Summer, what’s your excuse for not coming to enjoy it high atop the city overlooking the entire town, right in the heart of it. Expect reflections of fireworks coming off surrounding buildings, your most gracious hosts Josh Silver & Karl Meche bringing their own “fireworks” to the place inside, sumptuous food menu, and bottles flowing across the room inside & out. All this to the highly uplifting music of DJ AviLarge!!  Call 514.777.1676 for reservations (it’s suggested).

It looks like a beautiful night to experience the magic of the L’International des Feux Loto-Quebec. Talented pyrotechnical experts from the USA will be gracing our skies tonight. Romantic? Indeed.

SUNDAY
For the fifth year in a row, spa-goers will be able to enjoy Balnea’s flavourful event “Ete Des Chefs” every Sunday. The thermal station, situated in Bromont-sur-le-Lac, will welcome 10 acclaimed chefs who will display their formidable culinary skills. Today, Carles Abellan from Tapas 24 will showcase his talents in this enchanting setting.

Love drums? How about just seeing something out of the ordinary? Well, the Incredible Drum Show at Place des Arts is a show like no other. With an off-the-wall sense of humour, a masterful direction and two remarkable drummers, the mixing technical virtuosity, juggling, poetry, mime and comedy of the Fills Monkey will make you leave the show full of energy. Trust us.

Six Pianos – Six amazing virtuosos get together for piano pyrotechnics. Imagine 6 grand pianos on stage in a semi-circle playing a programme of Moussorgski, Khatchaturian and Ravel. Welcome to the Festival de Lanaudière.
