Montreal Weekender: January 3 through 5, 2014

The first weekend after New Year’s Eve – how many more parties could there possibly be? Not that many, as it turns out, but that’s no reason to stay in and let the days pass by. We’ve covered all of the city’s notable happenings to kick off 2014 in this edition of the Weekender…

Friday
Let’s kick off the New Year with a major bang! Deadmau5 is in town and will be no doubt tearing the roof off New City Gas. Being one of the leading figures in electronic dance music during the first decade of the 2000s and now, his hits have included “Faxing Berlin” and “The Veldt,” and the global appearances this star DJ has made will take days to mention. This is a live show not to be missed!

Starting today, the Centaur Theatre rolls out the red carpet for the Wildside Festival featuring the best and up-and-coming indie theatre artists, including the jury-selected winner of the Best English Language Production of the 2013 Montreal Fringe: Little Orange Man. This is a ‘first-come, first-exhibited’ kind of art display for emerging artists across Montreal and a superb event to support.

Saturday
Green Day fans rejoice! The national tour of the explosive Broadway hit American Idiot, called “wonderfully raucous” and “emotionally charged” by The New York Times and “flat-out electrifying” by the Boston Globe, will make its Montreal premiere at Place des Arts tonight. Winner of two Tony Awards, this is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9-11 world. The musical features the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track “American Idiot.”

Tonight is your last chance to catch Telus Fire On Ice, a beautiful evening where magical fireworks light up Montreal’s winter sky alongside to the melodies of some of your favourite movie soundtracks of all time. So grab a hot chocolate, dress warmly and head over with your closest ones to celebrate the New Year under a colourful sky.

Sunday
It’s the closing day of Montreal en Fetes and so far the feedback has been amazing. If you are looking for a full day of activities, this is the event to follow, filled with stops containing hot chocolate and mulled wine along your stroll of Old Montreal, a wish-a-phone where you can divulge your hopes and wants for 2014, street performers and much, much more. This all starts at 10am and goes until… well, you decide.

Nothing beats a lazy Sunday movie marathon, especially with the plethora of fantastic movies out there right now, such as The Wolf Of Wall Street, American Hustle and The Hobbit (we suggest the IMAX version). Make it a full day of popcorn binging and critiquing at one of our choice movie theatres, such as the Scotiabank Theatre for the more mainstream flicks or the AMC Forum as an alternative.
