Montreal Weekender: February 20 through 23, 2014

THURSDAY
It starts today! Montreal EN LUMIÈRE, one of the largest winter festivals in the world, an annual celebration drawing 900,000 fans to experience the joy of Montreal wintertime through a unique program combining performing arts, gastronomy and full nights featuring DJs and parties, begins. The choices are endless; you can spend the day checking out the free festival of our cheeses, free photo and art exhibits, open air bars, an awesome ferris wheel and more. Check out their full schedule here and start planning away.

Following the success of last year’s MentaliTea event where more than $7,000 was raised for mental health, the Douglas Foundation’s Young Ambassadors are bringing their Brain Food/MentaliTea 2014 event back again, this time taking over the Newtown Club. 200 young professionals are expected, who will have the opportunity to socialize and have fun while learning about and tasting food that is good for mental health. In addition to the catering service, each ticket also includes one alcoholic beverage and access to their yummy candy bar.

FRIDAY
Want to witness the majestic beauty of the butterfly? From February 20 until April 27, the Botanical Garden’s Main Exhibition Greenhouse will be transformed into a huge butterfly house, welcoming thousands of coloured butterflies and moths. ‘Butterflies Go Free’ allows you to plunge into the universe of butterflies from around the world and allows you to get inspired and learn about these fluttering rainbows.

A lover of classical, perhaps? Or maybe you are looking to get into this romantic genre of music… either way, The Rialto Theatre is presenting the first edition of the Bel Canto Festival starting tonight featuring classical music events showcasing the beauty of singing. Kicking off tonight is “Cendrillon” based on the classic French fairy tale by Charles Perrault. With this work the composer tells us a well-known story; he opens the pages of a story book and makes familiar scenes and characters spring to life in a three-dimensional Opera world.

SATURDAY
There’s nothing more that we love than a wonderful and intimate evening featuring the movers and shakers of our city in support of a fantastic cause. DOLCE is back and will host an evening for young professionals to practice their networking talents and socialize with the best. There will be an array of drinks from their open bar, sweet desserts and the opportunity to bid on an array of prized auction items all while supporting a great cause: the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Bota Bota Spa in Old Montreal is celebrating their involvement in the ice canoe challenge by throwing a ‘Bathe & Bite, Canoer Edition’ menu with their partners at Auberge Saint-Gabriel. Enjoy a comforting lunch in their floating restaurant while you watch the race live. A truly unique experience. Tickets are $100 per person, including water circuit journey, three-course meal and a glass of wine. Cozy up!

SUNDAY
Here is your chance to catch something truly special in Old Montreal’s charming district. The Pointe-à-Callière will bring Old Montreal to life with the sound of its Port Symphonies, a unique outdoor concert featuring trains, tugboats, boats and other urban instruments uniting to create original and unusual musical sounds. The event begins at 1:30pm at Place Royale, a perfect spot to view and enjoy the Port Symphonies

Once again the Segal Centre brings us another riveting performance, this time featuring two history greats, Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ‘The Meeting’ depicts the supposed encounter of these two men debating their various approaches to the same social problems that remain relevant today such as war, poverty, racism and the need for self-empowerment.

Got a whole lotta’ love? Led Zeppelin surely do, and since they can’t be here right now, we got the next best thing: their rockin’ cover band ‘Kashmir’. Tonight the band pays tribute to Led Zeppelin and all his greatest hits.
