Montreal Weekender: December 9 through 11, 2011

With the holidays fast approaching, we’re sure your busy work schedules are making it stressful to get your secret Santa shopping done. That’s where we come in.  We’ll direct you to the most notable neighbourhoods and boutique stores for amazing and unique gift ideas, on top of which we will help you eat, drink and party along the way.

To get yourself ready for your first day of shopping, start off with dinner on Friday night at Griffintown Cafe in the neighbourhood of the same name. This cozy spot in one of the fastest-growing and hottest neighbourhoods of Montreal offers amazing dishes inspired by Latin and Mexican flavours mixed with American Southern cuisine. The best part about a Friday night at Griffentown Cafe is their live music.  No need to go out after; just rest and prepare for a full day of shopping on Saturday.

Start off your shopping morning with brunch at Boulangerie Guillaume, considered to be one of the best bakeries in Montreal. Have a seat and enjoy some of the best bread and jams in the city alongside a traditional brunch dish (their sourdough is what they are famous for).

Staying around the Plateau neighbourhood, stop by the Charlotte Hosten Boutique to browse her collection of custom made necklaces and jewelry. Next, hit up The Puces POP Craft & DIY Fair, where, in their 7th year running, they will be showcasing 100 local artists and artisans and their trade, from music to art. Here you will find gifts in the range of bath and body, independent clothing designers, jewelry, ceramics, and art.

For dinner, go casual with a meal at Big in Japan on the main. This fast food-style Izakaya (Japanese small plates) is the perfect pit stop before heading off to Blizzarts for a fun night of dancing and drinks just up the street.

On Sunday, grab lunch at Cafe Neve in the Plateau. This is one of the best Cafes in the city and they also serve up a yummy brunch. We love their bagel with lox and cream cheese alongside a latte. Next, head to Quai 417 in the Old Port, a new outpost of urban cool when it comes to the fashion world. It offers unique clothing by European designers for both men and women that is a bit on the edgy side.

Next, head to the downtown area and check out Just Worn. Lino Catalano is back in town from LA and re-opened his shop inspired by a shop he visited on Santa Monica Blvd, the Crossroads Trading Co. Just Worn is designer pre-owned fashion and accessories bought with a designer’s eye.

After a long day of shopping head home to wrap your gifts, write your cards, and have a nice cozy dinner in.
