Montreal Weekender: August 7 through 10, 2014

THURSDAY
In association with Centropolis and Spa Orazio, Station 16 Gallery is pleased to present Parisian street artist Le Diamantaire in his first solo show in Montreal to kick off the weekend. Le Diamantaire works with discarded mirrors to create hand-cut diamonds that decorate the streets of cities like Paris, Barcelona, and Zurich. He has created a new genre of street art, producing dazzling elements for urban walls and to make them shine. The opening reception is from 6pm-9pm. Shine bright like a diamond.

Rosalie Restaurant Bar and Fondation Amal are once again teaming up to bring you Cheeseburgers for Charity. Rosalie’s terrace will be the place to be with guests enjoying complimentary BBQ cheeseburgers, inspiring music and a positive attitude. 10% of all liquor sales will go straight to Fondation Amal, a civic-minded charity that helps children across Quebec overcome physical and mental difficulties.

Montreal Gourmand starts today in Montreal’s Old Port on the St-Laurent/Jacques Cartier Esplanade where visitors will be welcome to taste hundreds of local products, from wine to cheese, to chocolate to maple treats, and other food delights with world-class taste. Not only will visitors have a culinary experience, but they will also be able to visit the Artist’s Corner and hear local Quebec bands for a fun-filled afternoon.

FRIDAY
Got the blues? We mean the music blues, of course. The Montreal International FestiBlues, the only major international event taking place in the north on the island of Montreal, started up and is packed with great artists over a span of four days, celebrating its sixteenth edition this year. The schedule is grand, so start taking notes and fill up your weekend.

For well over 10 years now, Richie Santana’s tracks and remixes have been topping the charts without a sign of stopping. With countless original tracks featured on compilations by top-tier artists like Steve Lawler, Carl Cox and Chus & Ceballos, his work is desired by the best in the industry and can now be heard at New City Gas. DSTRKT Fridays on the New City Gas terrace will be popping off tonight with this dance music legend. Get there early – things will get crazy.

SATURDAY
Under Pressure, the largest and longest running event of its kind all across North America, kicks off today. Under Pressure is a graffiti festival that focuses on community development, artist empowerment and positive youth development through ownership and responsibility of a shared space. The festival takes place over two days featuring performers from across the country to keep the crowd lively. Don’t miss the b-boy and b-girl battle going down on Sunday afternoon. There is a kids area for the little ones to get creative and a skate ramp set up over the course of the two days for open jams and a competition.

The party happening Saturday nights at Le Pandore has just kicked it up a notch for this week with the dynamic musical duo of DJs Rich & Kiss as well as hosts Josh Silver, Karl Meche, and Brahms Yaiche. Dinner and sundown bevies await you on the terrace overlooking the city before the lights get turned down low and the music gets ramped up on the dance floor inside. Come see what the city’s been talking about.

The greatest yoga event of the year takes place today in Old Montreal with the Lole White Tour touching down in one of our city’s most beautiful spots. All about cultivating well-being, Lolë invites you to its third and most impressive edition. Join an immense gathering of thousands of people wearing white for a yoga session dedicated to peace.

SUNDAY

If guitar riffs, long hair and head banging is more up your alley, Heavy Montreal will bring the trees down at Parc Jean-Drapeau today. The 6th edition of Heavy Montreal will host iconic bands such as Metallica, Slayer, The Offspring, Anthrax, Pennywise, The Count with Ice T, Bad Religion, Grimskunk and more. Doc Martens? Check. Earplugs? Not if you’re a bad ass.

After all the serenity from Saturday’s serenity, you might need a bit of a wake up, and what better way than to get your  pants scared off you? PEUR DÉPÔT, a unique attraction offering an immersive sensory trail that plays on our fears, has planted its scary seeds in Old Montreal with heart-stopping backdrops, stunning visual and sound effects, projections and animations. You will be immersed into different universes that evoke your collective fears; think claustrophobia, fear of the dark and more. To be discovered at your own risk!
