Montreal Jewish Music Festival Brings Most Internationally Diverse Lineup Yet

The fifth Montreal Jewish Music Festival is on its way. Between August 24th and the 28th, the festival will present its most international edition to date, featuring musicians from over 15 countries who bring a world of influence to their brand of Jewish music.

From Iraqi’n’Roll to Electro-Klezmer-Cumbia, passing through Psychedelic Latvian Yiddish Rock and Cuban Style Klezmer, the spicy lineup promises to have festival-goers indulge in its eclectic lineup.

On opening night, the MJMF with KlezKanada will proudly present the not-to-be-missed klezmer event of the year at The Oscar Peterson Hall.

Der Groyser Concert Internacionale features a 16-piece band with the world’s leading Jewish music instrumentalists and Yiddish song interpreters where performers from Hungary, The US, France, Israel, The UK, Russia and Canada will take the stage.

On the other side of town, the MJMF will be collaborating with POP Montreal’s Marché des Possibles to showcase Orkestar Kriminal, a gang of criminal gypsy punks straight out of Montreal, led by the powerful and captivating Giselle Weber.

Among other notable events, Dudu Tassa & The Kuwaitis will perform Israeli-rock and Iraqi popular music; Latvian psychedelic Yiddish rock band Forshpil will blend the vintage sounds and classic riffs of the Doors and Jefferson Airplane with Yiddish art song and poetry; Forshpil will be joined on stage by Juno-nominated and festival favourites, the punk-brass-gypsy-folk force Lemon Bucket Orkestra; Montreal’s Magical Crimea will perform a gypsy-swing tribute to Russian Jewish composers of the Soviet era; South Florida’s Klezmer Company Orchestra will infuse the Segal Centre with Cuban jazz and Argentinean tango; while Sala Rossa will showcase a Soirée Éclectique, new Jewish music from everywhere in the world from Argentina to Pakistan.

And that’s just a portion of what’s on the calendar of events for this lively event.

Mark your calendars now and get ready to dive into the diverse and electrifying music of the MJMF.
