French and Canadian film industry leaders came together on Monday night for an enchanting evening showcasing Juan Solanas’ groundbreaking film Upside Down. The setting of the premiere, The Imperial Cinema, evoked an atmosphere reminiscent of the Golden Era, an idyllic backdrop for the film’s picturesque cinematography. In Upside Down, Argentine filmmaker Solanas transports his viewers into an alternate universe where two worlds hold opposing forces of gravity.

Adam (Jim Sturgess) exists Down Below, while Eden (Kirsten Dunst) lives Up Top. The two fall in love after meeting on the mountain tops of their respective worlds but are quickly torn apart by evil mega-corporation TransWorld. Throughout the film, Adam, a scientist who owns a powerful anti-gravity powder, strives to find a way to live Up Top and reunite with Eden.

Highlights of the film include a Cafe boasting ballroom dancing on both the floor and ceiling, upside-down cocktails, flying pancakes, floating, jumping, spinning, and even falling from one world’s ocean into that of the other.

The independent film, which is being heralded as revolutionary for its astounding special effects, used cutting-edge technology, including a multi-million dollar camera used to create the special effects in Harry Potter, and took three years to perfect.

Among the utopian settings are ethereal depictions of various Montreal locations including the Old Port, the Lookout, and various sites throughout Griffintown. In attendance were Liberal party member Martin Cauchon, and Producers Claude Leger and Jonathan Vanger.

Upside Down will be in theaters April 26th, 2013.
