Montreal Art Tattoo Show: Aesthetic Rebellion

The last couple of years have sparked a renaissance in the old art of body tattooing. Now more than ever, a mounting interest has drawn the world of fashion towards a new form of expressionism. Similar to the many great artists of that particular period, this modern movement in body art has become an outlet for creative liberation. What was once considered underground and controversial has now become a craze amongst trendsetters.

Tattoos have been a part of human culture for centuries; they have reflected a right of passage, signifying an induction, or a form of transformation. Recently, the superficial embellishments have become a must-have accessory for designers. Despite their innate sense of rebellion, tattoos are being flaunted on and off the runways of top fashion houses around the world. The human body has become a piece of art, a canvas on which artistic expression is perceptibly displayed. In today’s fashion world, the art form’s mainstream existence has come to alter past pretenses. Considering the duel lines of thought encompassing the trend, taboo notions have long been obliterated as its artistic presence has dominated the fashion forefront.

Designers such as Rodarte, Jean Paul Gaultier and Peter Philips for Chanel have incorporated intricate body art in past collections. Our poster child of cool and embodiment of ultra badass, Rick Genest, respectably labeled as Zombie Boy, personifies the core elements for what tattoo has become in this age. The fully tatted icon has been a muse for artists and designers alike. Zombie Boy’s fame can almost be considered as counterintuitive to tattooing culture. The growing popularity of the once-subversive art can now be regarded as rebellion against rebelliousness itself. Its blasé presence in society has certainly rendered it highly receptive in many circles.

Now funneling to the Montreal Art Tattoo Show, the 10th annual convention brings together tattoo artists from all over the world, showcasing their creative and innovative styles, as well as their personal approach to the art. With over 10,000 guests attending this yearly gathering, the event provides attendees the opportunity to meet close to 200 world-renowned artists. Devoted fans can add pieces to their own collection, as all tattoo artists will be available to work on the spot. For the inquisitive, it is a great approach to familiarize one’s self to the popular art.  The event will also be holding numerous competitions, as well as art exhibitions and live performances. The Windsor Station will welcome its guests from September 7th to the 9th. For further inquiries, click here
