Miss Iceland Told She’s Too Fat and Needs to Eat Less; Society’s Beauty Standards Officially Insane

Miss Iceland has told an international beauty pageant what every woman should tell competitions of such vapid foundation.

“Miss Grand International doesn’t deserve my face, body, personality or heart,” wrote Arna Yr Jonsdottir aka Miss Iceland 2016 in an open letter she shared on Instagram.

Her grievance? The Las Vegas-based pageant’s staff apparently told her she had to lose weight before the competition because she’s too fat, and that she should eat less so the judges would like her more.

The Miss Grand International Organization somehow managed to defend its position, with elderly gentleman President Nawat Itsaragrisil saying, “she may be a little bit fat and they recommended her, in a good way, to try to lose some weight in order to improve her chance to win.” Nice one.

Impeccable timing on her post, too. The letter was uploaded around the same time women across Iceland left work at 2:38 p.m. on Monday, which marks the time of day after which they’re essentially working for free compared to their male counterparts. The initiative was part of a nationwide protest against the country’s gender wage gap.

“In my country my body shape is perfect. And that’s what I’m gonna remember. No one will ever tell me anything else,” wrote Jonsdottir.

She continued: “The year is 2016 and if you are gonna hold an international pageant you have to be able to see the international beauty.”

So in the words of John Oliver, “Beauty pageants: how is this still a thing?”
