Last week we snuck out of the office on the early side and beelined our way to Yaletown to check out the opening of Minami Restaurant located at 1118 Mainland Street (former go-to cocktail-spot Goldfish Seafood and Chops).
After walking the blue carpet, we were promptly offered a celebratory glass of champagne before making our way into the packed lounge area to taste test a few colourful (and delicious) bites from Minami’s Aburi-style menu. On our notable list: we’ll definitely be ordering more of their signature lightly charred salmon oshi sushi (with jalapeño), skewered and cubed prime rib and crispy gyoza.
Not too much was altered layout-wise by the new owners (Seigo Nakamura of Aburi Restaurants Canada), but then again there wasn’t really a need to. Guests can still expect a spacious bar and lounge area up front with well-appointed dining sections paving the way to a gorgeously green back garden patio. Nakamura has put his own stamp on the place with bright, oversized images of Koi fish and Japanese script emblazoned on walls and columns throughout though.
Especially commanding of our attention was the large mural-like “Minami” written on the patio wall – a focal point throughout the restaurant hand painted by Seigo himself as a nod to his daughter.
Minami is a definite culinary asset to the Yaletown scene and offers the right balance of class complimented by comfort amidst the sleek city setting that defines the neighbourhood.
