Men’s SS14 Trend: The Double Breasted Blazer

Double-breasted blazers have made yet another appearance for Spring/Summer ’14. Whether constructed in unexpected patterns, given an athletic spin or paired with more casual pieces, the traditional tailoring of the male silhouette has been updated. Throughout many men’s Spring 2014 runway shows, the familiar slim cuts are born again into more relaxed shapes.

Though the double-breasted blazer has been a hard trend to catch on with the typical North American consumer, it is undoubtedly back. David Hart, DKNY and J. Crew are offering it again for men that are ahead of the sartorial curve. Michael Kors presented a double-breasted blazer with giant lapels and stated that it was “A DB for an entire generation of men who have never worn one,” and Band of Outsiders has brought the DB blazer back into it’s typically urban prep approach.

When choosing the right double-breasted blazer for you, first consider how you would want to wear it. For a more casual look, a four-button blazer is ideal. If worn as a suit for a formal occasion, a more structured, six-button blazer is highly appropriate.

If you are tall and slim, a wide-shouldered silhouette is most flattering. If the length is proportionate and the jacket is fitted well around the waist, a double-breasted blazer will work for a shorter, very muscular, or wider shaped man.

Wearing a DB blazer to work is daring, so if you are up for making a statement, keeping the colours and patterns subtle is most suitable.

Though high-fashion men have worn the double-breasted blazer for years, the typical Canadian male has been hesitant to try the trend. With a fresh start in 2014, now is a better time than ever to inject a bit of life and boldness into your spring wardrobe!
