KAYAK Names the Hottest New Year’s Eve Destinations to Ring in 2016

Now that you’ve figured out your Halloween costume, it’s time to figure out how you’ll spend the holidays – and who you’ll be spending them with.

Most notably, of course, is New Year’s Eve.

We know, we know, you probably don’t want to start thinking about 2016 yet. But you probably should. More importantly, where you’ll be waking up to kick off the year…

If you’re in need of a little insight, KAYAK just listed the Top 10 Trending New Year’s Eve Destinations. If you live in Vancouver, you may want to stay right where you are to ring in the New Year – especially if you’re in the market for a fling with an out-of-towner.

According to KAYAK, these cities saw the greatest increase in New Year’s searches, making them the hottest destinations for NYE:

1. Dubai, UAE
The city’s impressive fireworks display, which broke the record for the longest and largest fireworks display in the world, is just one of many over-the-top draws for New Year’s Eve spent in Dubai. Not to mention, David Guetta is set to play at the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre on December 31st. There has been a 70 per cent increase in flight searches compared to the previous year.

2. Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena has all the ingredients of a New Year’s you’ll never forget: picturesque beaches, amazing food, vibrant culture, and wild nightlife. New Year’s Eve will feature fireworks across the city, along with rowdy street celebrations. There has been a 68 per cent increase in flight searches compared to the previous year.

3. Barcelona, Spain
If you’re looking to eat, drink, and party your face off until the sunrise with fellow young people from around the world, Barcelona on New Year’s Eve is for you. Think: colourful street celebrations, clubs like you’ve never experienced, and even a free celebration next to Montjuic’s Magic Fountain. There’s been a 51 per cent increase in flight searches compared to the previous year.

4. Reykjavik, Iceland
If you’ve always said you wanted to check out Iceland, hitting the country’s capital, Reykjavik, for New Year’s Eve is always an option. New Year’s Eve celebrations involve everything from bonfires and a massive fireworks display to gala dinners and pubs that stay open until 5am. There’s been a 41 per cent increase in flight searches compared to the previous year.

5. Tokyo, Japan
New Year’s Eve is one of the liveliest times in Tokyo, filled with parties and dining for all budgets. Not to mention, you’ll be able to witness “Hatsumode” first-hand; when the clock strikes midnight at the city’s many temples, expect a bell to ring 108 times as crowds rush to visit the shrines for the first time in the year. There’s been a 40 per cent increase in flight searches compared to the previous year.

6. Atlanta, U.S.
Aside from the nightclubs, pub-crawls, and hotel parties, you can’t spend a New Year’s Eve in Atlanta and not watch the famous 800-pound peach descend from 138 feet above street level in a massive festival that’s aptly called ‘The Peach Drop.’ There’s been a 38 per cent change in flight searches compared to the previous year.

7. Santiago, Chile
Ringing in the New Year in Santiago typically means dancing until sunrise, warm weather, fireworks, and parties big and small. As an added bonus, on New Year’s Day, the fish market at Mercado Central dishes up the perfect hangover cure. There’s been a 36 per cent increase in flight searches compared to the previous year.

8. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
In Rio de Janeiro, you’ll find the ultimate “white party” as you join the thousands of locals who celebrate dressed in white with red accessories to signify luck and romance. Aside from Rio Carnival, New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most popular events in the city. There’s a massive celebration all along Copacabana Beach beginning at 8pm, which features live music that includes everything from traditional Brazilian music to hard rock and roll. There’s been a 35 per cent increase in flight searches compared to the previous year.

9. Chicago, U.S.
Whether you’re looking for a fireworks cruise, swanky galas, live music, a hotel party, or to ring in to New Year over an Instagram-worthy meal, you’ll find it in Chicago. Other highlights include a brand new riverside New Year’s Eve celebration, complete with a midnight countdown that will feature a giant star ascending 36 stories up the side of the Hyatt Regency Chicago building. There’s been a 34 per cent change in flight searches compared to the previous year.

10.Vancouver, Canada
Our very own Vancouver is the 10th most popular travel destination for New Year’s Eve. It makes sense; the ski hills are just a short drive away, the party options – from low-key live music to glamorous gals – are plentiful, and you can join more than 2,500 people who swim in English Bay on New Year’s Day. Not to mention, the first free New Year’s Eve Vancouver celebration to take place in Downtown Vancouver in more than a decade will happen this year. There’s been a 32 per cent change in flight services compared to the previous year.
