Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been criticized recently for cozying up to wealthy elites and ignoring the issues of average Canadians.
Never one to shy away from rapid changes in course, last week he announced a three-week nationwide tour where he’ll meet with Canadians at coffee shops and church basements to chat about their concerns.
Yesterday, he revealed the final two tenets of his three-part strategy to return to the humble PM Canadians elected last fall: skipping both the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland and U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump’s inauguration (though many Canadian Prime Ministers have been counted absent at US presidential inaugurations in past).
“This tour will provide many great opportunities to engage directly with Canadians and will now be taking place over a longer period than previously planned,” said press secretary Cameron Ahmad about Trudeau’s priorities.
It’s a pretty chill start to Trudeau’s year. The Canadian PM has been on a family holiday since December 23 and will start his coffee shop tour next week. It begins with a Highway 401 drive from Ottawa to London during which he’ll stop at various communities along the way.
It’s a bit of an odd thing, really – a campaign-style tour when you’re already elected – but perhaps necessary in the wake of the PM’s plummeting approval rating.
