Jordan Singer: Today’s Notable Young Professional

Henry Singer, the modern menswear retailer, offers a unique assortment of tailoring and sportswear from the world’s finest brands at four locations in Alberta. Calgary’s Bankers Hall and Southcentre Mall, and Edmonton’s Manulife Place and West Edmonton Mall, house the go-to spots for not only suits, but other mens finery from notable names such as Hugo Boss, Armani Collezioni, Lanvin, Etro, Canali and Canada Goose. Notable sat down with Jordan Singer, President of the company and Henry Singer’s grandson, to get the lowdown on what makes the 36-year-old-tick.

A graduate of NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology’s Fashion Buying and Merchandise Management program, Jordan says his education is directly applicable to a large part of what he does on a day-to-day basis. Jordan lived in Manhattan for close to three years, and worked for Hugo Boss in London, England for five… sounds like more than a thimbleful of inspirational material to us.

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
Henry Singer is the destination for men to find success through what they wear. My job involves everything from the concept of the product and buying to dealing with clients and stakeholders (landlords, the bank, senior management).

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
I chose to come back to Calgary in 2002 after working in London for five years to work with my father and be part of my family’s business. I sought the challenge to drive a business and be able to see the direct impact my business decisions could make.

As for the inspiration, I’m a design culture person. I find intriguing design everywhere when I’m travelling, dining out, listening to music, in new engineering, technology, or just walking through the streets of a city.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis?
The best part is the people; we have a great team, great clients, and great suppliers. We have a ton of fun.

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
I really don’t think my work/life balance is off because I truly love what I do… I enjoy working as much as I do. In my role there’s always something I could be doing, but I’ve learned to take the time to balance that with an enjoyment of my personal time.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Henry Singer just celebrated its 75th birthday, so in five years I see myself slicing an 80th birthday cake!  That, and I foresee a greater online presence; an Omni channel form of retail, where the online functionality nicely compliments our bricks and mortar operation.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
Presiding over the company during the 2009 recession was a major challenge. It really was a huge learning curve as it forced us to be better at what we do and how we do it.

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
No, money does not equal happiness. Happiness equals happiness, and happiness is linked to success. I feel happy when I achieve my definition of success. For me that definition encompasses health and well-being, friends and family, and life experiences including those that come from travel. I believe happiness is more soulful.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
I’m not sure it has been defined yet. There have been many milestones to date, but the most memorable is yet to come. At 36, if I thought I had already achieved that “most memorable milestone,” it would show a failure of my character. I’m still searching for that milestone; it’ll take a career’s worth of work to achieve it.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Have fun with what you do and try to learn from every challenging situation.

Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
Calgary is a great dining city; there are so many options. My top five places in Calgary (in no particular order) are: Mercato (2224 4 St SW), Divino (113 8 Ave SW), Cucina (515 8 Ave SW), NOtaBLE (4611 Bowness Rd NW) and CHARCUT (899 Centre Street SW).

When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
I love to be physically active. I also listen to a lot of music; I have an eclectic taste and like to explore different genres. I also love to socialize with friends, which often includes dining out at said favourite places.

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
Japan. I’ve been twice and want to continue to revisit. I’m fascinated by the deep, rich culture of that country. I also love London and specific spots in Italy. When I travel I soak in the design culture from fashion, art, architecture, engineering and music.

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
I’m not sure one track could do it; I think I need a whole soundtrack. For instance, some situations would call for “Ice, Ice Baby” (Vanilla Ice)… but others would require the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter,” “Golden Brown,” (The Stranglers) or even Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me.”

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
WWF wrestler, obviously.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
The Henry Singer Fashion Group is a long-time supporter of the United Way.

What to you is notable?
It’s notable how social media has changed our lives.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone.
