In the first 48 hours after the news broke, people around the world struggled to find words in response to Friday night’s appalling attacks in Paris. Others, meanwhile, found the wrong words.
And John Oliver, as per usual, found the perfect ones.
Oliver opened Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight with a moment of premium cable profanity, which was equally hilarious as it was responsible. On the outside a comedy segment fuelled by creative expressions of the word ‘asshole’, it was also a deliberately measured reaction in contrast to the loud voices who’d already used the opportunity to denounce refugees, collectively blame 1.5 billion people for the murders, and suggest Parisians should carry guns to concerts.
Mostly, though, it was about as profound a message as necessary to perpetrators of terrorism:
