Jamie and Melissa of Doll Face Spa: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneurs

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneurs are Jamie and Melissa of Toronto’s Doll Face Spa, offering innovative beauty services at attainable prices while overcoming a significant challenge within just two years of opening…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your business in a nutshell.
Doll Face strives to bring new and innovative beauty services to the widest community while maintaining affordability and quality.

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
First we identified a need for a new kind of spa, one that made both men and woman feel comfortable partaking of multiple spa services, visiting together, sharing a coffee… basically having a great time as if they were members of a club, where everybody knows each other’s names. But we wanted to provide these services at reasonable prices so that most people could participate.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
Hands down, the interaction with our clients is the highlight of each day. Over time, they have shared some of their life stories and many laughs with us and we have all become family. Seeing their delight after they’ve received a spa service is very rewarding. The most challenging part is ensuring that EVERYONE is happy at Doll Face 100% of the time.

Where do you see your business going in five years?
We would love to see Doll Face expanding to more locations throughout the city and becoming well known for affordable but amazing spa services, highly qualified staff and camaraderie.

What does success look like to you?
Making our clients happy is success at Doll Face and in this regard we have been quite successful since the day we opened our doors. Some of our clients have been coming regularly from the beginning, and their overwhelming support and encouragement has contributed to this success.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
We have met some of the challenges of running a small business head on and learned from them. The most significant of these challenges was changing locations only two years after opening.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Running a business is not easy but it can be very rewarding. The key to success is to listen deeply to your clients, staff and trusted business mentors. Respect does not come from the title “boss” or “owner,” but has to be earned.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
Doll Face supports several charities. Consistently, we have supported State Farm and their United Way drive, and the Canadian Breast Cancer Support Fund. We have been one of the main sponsors for the Zauntourage Golf Classic in support of the “Right to Play” foundation.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?

How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
One of the most important contributors to well-being is getting enough sleep. This can be challenging, especially with children.
