Hump Up the Volume: Kardinal Offishall’s ‘Make It Happen’

Hump Day is once again upon the young Toronto professional.

And depending on the week, that hump can look like a wall or a waterslide. But what better way to clear the B-side than by grooving to the A-side of the finest musical talent this city has ever produced. Hump up the volume and cue the weekend soundtrack early with today’s killer Toronto tune: Kardinal Offishall’s Make It Happen (ft.Red1).

Kardinal, known to many as Canada’s Hip Hop Ambassador (and known to his mother as Jason Harrow), is as close to a household rap name as there is for Toronto.

And he should be.

His song BaKardi Slang pretty much coined our most beloved moniker – “…and everybody knows it’s the T-dot!

Raised in Flemington Park, he eventually settled into the Oakwood-Vaughan area and by the mid 90s was a part of The Circle, releasing his debut album Eye & I. While he saw commercial success in the early 2000s with Hustlin’, BaKardi Slang, and Ol’ Time Killin, it wasn’t until 2008 when he exploded. With Akon, on Akon’s distribution label, K.O. released the song, Dangerous, which went on to become a Top 5 Hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and claim a certified triple-platinum status in Canada. Since killin’ it behind the mic, he’s also gone on to killin’ it behind a desk, becoming the Creative Executive Director of Universal Music Canada’s A&R team in 2013.

You might only be halfway through the week YPs, but we’re not worried. Throw in those headphones, hump up the volume, and we have no doubt that you’ll make it happen.
