Hump Up the Volume: Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know”

Hump Day is once again upon the young Toronto professional.

And depending on the week, that hump can look like a wall or a waterslide. But what better way to clear the B-side than by grooving to the A-side of the finest musical talent this country has ever produced? So hump up the volume and cue the weekend soundtrack early with today’s killer CanCon: Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know.

You folks familiar with this gal? Here’s a little refresher:

She dated Ryan Reynolds. Oh, and she also sold over 60 million albums worldwide.

Also this. (You’re welcome.)

In 1991 she released a dance-pop album called Alanis that went platinum in Canada and earned her an opening gig for Vanilla Ice and the 1992 Juno for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year. Her second album, Now Is The Time, also did well, but when the first single off Jagged Little Pill dropped, things exploded.

While You Oughta Know put her on everyone’s map with its powerful vocals, catchy rock melody, and explicit lyrics, Jagged Little Pill went on to pump out SIX ranked singles, which kept the album in the Billboard Top 200 for over a year. It sold 33 million copies worldwide. At the time, that was the second highest number of copies ever sold by a female artist. You know who the first was? Yup, Shania Twain.

You’re only two and a half days into your week, YPs, but by this point, you oughta know the next two and a half are the best ones. So crank up and rock out; you’re on the home stretch.
