How to Make Even a Grinch Appreciate the Holidays

Before you accept your Grinch status and spend the holidays in a bitter rut, consider these 7 reasons to appreciate the holidays instead of sulk about them…

1. You Get Time Off Work
Regardless of whether you’re travelling to see family, heading to the slopes or sun, or staying home in your sweats, the holidays mean time off work. And it’s been a crazy few months at the office.

2. It’s an Excuse to Get in Touch
If there is ever a time to reach out to that long lost love, friend, or potential love interest (aside from their birthday), it’s during the holidays.

3. It’s an Opportunity to Score Points with the Parents
Whether you go home and help the parents create magic in the kitchen, send a package of gifts that were thoughtfully curated for both, or impress with talk of your career success during dinner, the holidays offer an opportune chance to earn “golden child” status.

4. You Don’t Have to Feel Guilty About Doing Nothing at All
When the office is empty, clients are on vacation, the stores are closed, and the holiday parties are over, you can feel absolutely fine about doing nothing at all. If you can’t make it home for the holidays, a movie marathon in your sweats sounds pretty good to us.

5. You Can Shamelessly Spend Money on Yourself
Even if you hate the holidays and the whole gift-giving thing, at least the holidays offer an excuse to shop for yourself. Not only did you just get that Christmas bonus, the Boxing Day sales start early (as in, the 23rd/24th). You may not have been “good” all year, but you have worked your butt off – so you deserve to give yourself a gift.

6. Despite the Lead Up, They End Abruptly
You’ve been bombarded with holiday music, ads and banter since Halloween ended. But for all the lead up, all traces of the holidays will disappear by January 1st – and you don’t have to think about it again for 10 more months.

7. You Can Start Fresh in the New Year
Maybe you’re not feeling the holidays this year because you’re in a bit of a rut. We get that. But instead of sitting around sulking, focus on the fact that in just days you can start fresh with a whole new year and all the possibilities it holds.
