How to Have a Better Boxing Day in Calgary 2014

Face it: turkey hangovers and mall parking lots are a bad combination.

In fact, malls are parking lots on Boxing Day, so if you care at all about your own well-being, it’s better to just stay away.

Instead, why not check out these much more subdued options for how to spend a great December 26 in Calgary. As for transportation, we suggest taking the best mode there is: your two feet and a heartbeat.

DAY
The Uncommons, Inglewood’s beloved creative little shop of trendy, thoughtful goods and other oddities, is open from 11am to 5pm. Their sale on a selection of apparel and gift items that will range from 10 to 30 per cent off, which is pretty rare, so take advantage.

The capital of cute dresses and accessories in Calgary, Purr, is having a “secret” Boxing Day sale on Friday that will definitely be worth checking out, despite the lack of details. While the majority of their stock is for the ladies, the 17th Ave location also has a well-curated men’s section downstairs, so he’ll have no excuses not to join you.

And a few blocks down is where he’ll really get excited: the newly-opened Frank & Oak Grey shop will be open from 10am to 7pm to continue its Boxing Week sales. If you missed out on the opening this past weekend, don’t make the same mistake on getting deals on the duds that will help you get a head start on that resolution to dress better in 2015.

NIGHT
For the second year running, the good old Ship & Anchor is hosting a Boxing Day Party with DJs Peej and Beau. It’s hard not to have a good time at The Ship, so when they say it’ll be a party, we definitely believe them.

If live music is the only cure for a hectic week, you’ll be pleased to hear that the smooth, folky melodies of The Mountaineer will be on display at The Palomino for your listening pleasure. They’ll be joined by Serious Clouds and Ryan Bourne, which will make for a delightful enough evening to make you forget all about the screaming children you had to put up with the day before.

If it’s going to take a lot more than music to rid you of your family holiday hangover, laugh it off at the FunnyFest Christmas Party. The location isn’t exactly central, but you could probably use a night off of the spiked punch. Get your tickets and show up early, as seating is first come first served, and we all know what happens if you sit in the front row – even at Christmas.
