Hospital Parking Just Got Way Cheaper for Frequent Visitors in Ontario

Anyone who has ever had a loved one in the hospital knows that the situation is stressful enough without added worries like steep parking fees.

But now, as announced by Premier Kathleen Wynne yesterday, frequent hospital visitors at select hospitals across the province will enjoy a bit of a break when it comes to paying for parking.

“Patients have made it clear they’re frustrated by the high rates,” said Wynne.

They will now receive discounts of at least 50 per cent on their daily parking fees.

Hospitals that charge more than $10 per day for parking will now provide passes valid for five, 10 and 30 days.

“The impetus for these changes around parking were about helping people who are at a very stressful time in their lives not to have an added burden of exorbitant parking rates,” said Wynne.

The passes are already in effect, having rolled out over the weekend, beginning on October 1.

Now, both visitors and patients (passes are transferrable) can enter and exit these parking lots throughout the day without having to pay each time.

According to Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins, the changes come at a cost for hospitals in lost revenue previously generated by the parking spots. Hoskins said that the government will work closely with the Ontario Hospital Association to make sure there are no “untoward effects” as a result.

About 900,000 patients and visitors across the province are expected to benefit from the reduced fees.
