Here’s What’s Happening at This Year’s Met Ball

The Met Ball, also known as The Costume Institute Gala, is celebrating the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute on May 5th this year, which will be opened officially by a ribbon cutting by Michelle Obama. The red carpet event is hosted by Vogue magazine and has been regarded as an important social event in New York City since 1971.

Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour oversees both the benefit committee and the guestlist and is demanding this year’s event to be even more exclusive than ever… with an unsurprisingly stricter dress code. Anna has bumped the ticket prices from $15,000 to $25,000, has tightened up the guestlist, and has enforced men to wear black tails and top hats and women to be dolled up in their finest ball gowns.

Guests in attendance are said to include Lupita Nyong’o, representing Prada, Zoe Saldana, who will be dressed by Prabal Gurung, Amanda Seyfried by Givenchy, Taylor Swift by J. Mendel, and many more. The 2014 Met Ball will be co-chaired by Sarah Jessica Parker, Bradley Cooper and Oscar de la Renta.

The subject of the new exhibit this year is the legendary twentieth-century Anglo-American couturier Charles James (1906–1978). Charles James: Beyond Fashion will run from May 8 to August 10 and will exhibit more than 100 of James’ gowns and explore his career in the newly renovated space, which includes the 4,200-square-foot Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery.
