Notable.ca has partnered with Grey Goose, the World’s Best Tasting Vodka, to celebrate an exclusive series of Grey Goose Notables: young professionals and entrepreneurs who are influential taste-makers. For the next 10 weeks, we will feature two unique Notables who have made it – young professionals who have reached success beyond their years. We’ll show you how these Notables enjoy what they’ve earned – how they entertain friends, where they travel, what drives them from the office to the golf course – and how they celebrate life and all it has to offer. So, raise a glass as we toast to the Grey Goose Notables…
Katherine Evans is a Vancouver-born hotelier who is part of Opus Hotels – a luxury brand of boutique hotel in Montreal and in Katherine’s hometown of Vancouver. As the Vice President and Director, Katherine’s taxed with tremendous responsibility in many aspects of the business. But, she insists, “I love every minute of it!”
Katherine took economics and geography at the University of Western Ontario before joining Opus, a perfect fit considering she asserts “the hospitality business is in my genes, it’s in my blood. My father led me here.” (She’s of course speaking of John Evans, the president and CEO of Trilogy Properties Corp., a BC property development company that developed, owns, and manages both the Opus Vancouver and Opus Montreal.)
While her professional life is fulfilling in ways many can only dream of – how could you not be happy following your dreams and being emphatically passionate about your career? – Katherine is also philanthropic, and counts the arts and women’s rights and issues as two of her main causes. Citing herself as also being predisposed to this avenue – her mother is a fundraiser who worked her entire life for various causes – Katherine says she wholeheartedly believes in “giving back to my community.”
She says she’s found a perfect fit for her life, and also puts forth that “with perseverance and dedication, you will find the best fit for life.”
Katherine Evans is a Notable, and to her, notable is “My family, and my Love.”
If there was one location that every person must see, what would it be? Why?
The rolling hills of Tuscany. In our everyday busy lives, we rarely have the time to shut off the clock, and admire the beauty of our surroundings. The vast rolling vineyards in the Tuscan region of Italy are the most breathtaking, calm, and stunning views of the world.
What is your general life philosophy? / What advice would you want to share with others?
In life, we work hard to create the things we dream of. Hard work translates into the means to spend life as you wish. Family is the basis of it all; tradition, togetherness and happiness starts at home.
Why were the early stages of your career (which can be some of the toughest years of any successful business person’s life) worth what you are now able to enjoy?
The early stages of my career were challenging and incredibly educational. I continue everyday to learn and expand my knowledge base in my business. The best schooling in the world happens in the work-place.
How do you enjoy life? What are some of your life indulgences?
I enjoy life everyday, and enjoy my family as often as possible. I work hard at the office, in the gym, and I may indulge at the spa every once in a while. Oh! And on a beach with my man as often as possible.
Please describe what entertaining looks like to you? What makes the perfect host?
Entertaining encompasses all aspects you could imagine: a perfect venue, gorgeous food and drink, amazing live music, and beautiful people. The perfect host is an organized host. I love to enjoy all events with my guests – even when I am hosting.
What is more important when entertaining; the space, or the people in the space, and why?
The people make every event a success. No matter where in the world you are, as long as you have amazing, inspiring people surrounding you, the event will be a grand success!
Do you cook? If yes, what is your best dish? If no, what is your favourite dish to be cooked for you?
I love to cook. I am the most comfortable when in my gorgeous kitchen. The most important rooms in our home are the family room and kitchen. My best dish? Oven-roasted rosemary organic whole chickens, with roasted vegetables, and pasta to start with my homemade tomato sauce (old secret family recipe).
