Granville Island Outdoor Farmers Market Opens

With the summer season in our midst, so comes the welcomed opening of Vancouver’s Farmers Markets – something we definitely pine for during those dreary months of winter. Alongside the various well-known (and frequently shopped) West End, Trout Lake, Kitsilano and Main Street markets, which are either already (or about to) open, there are plenty more worth noting. To that end, we give you another market to consider exploring…

Aside from needing next to no excuse to head down to Granville Island on any given day, the press release we received late last week announcing the launch of a Weekly Outdoor Farmers Market definitely caught our attention. Starting this Thursday (June 6), you’ll be able to cruise around this picturesque island oasis in the city and load up on seasonal offerings beyond what you’ll find at their year-round indoor market (which has been around for at least 20 years).

Look for the outdoor portion to take over Triangle Square every week from 9am until 3pm, essentially making it the city’s largest farmers market with between 15 and 30 additional vendors added to the mix.

Coming up for their first weekend, we spoke with Scott Fraser, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, and asked about any additional noteworthy items of interest we could share with our readers. Out of the gates, he said that a solid start to the season will see BC-grown strawberries available sooner than anticipated (for those fanatics out there), along with plenty of baked goods, produce, gardening items, and (of course) samples to try out.

Once done shopping, store your goods and be sure to head out to any one of the nearly dozen different full-service (licensed) cafes or restaurants on the island for a bit of R&R and celebrate the fact that it is, after all, almost the weekend.
