Get Out of Town…to Bowen Island

We’re always looking for notable ways to get out of the city over the weekend, especially as the holiday madness begins to take hold (hello, Robson Street).

That being said, we’ve done our research and have a sweet little itinerary for your consideration. So pack a day (or overnight) bag this weekend and head across the Lions Gate Bridge (by car, bus, water taxi or taxi) and make your way over to Horseshoe Bay to the charming coastal oasis known as Bowen Island.

We love Bowen Island, firstly for its laid-back, artisan vibe, but also for its easy, 20-minute commute from the mainland. Come summer, prepare for potential wait times, as it morphs into a haven for weekend getaways. When winter calls, you’ll still find plenty of noteworthy things to do, perfect for hard-working YPs looking for a bit of R&R.

Eat
In the AM, land at Bowen’s main ferry terminal (Snug Cove) and spend part of your day exploring the boutiques, funky restaurants and cafes you’ll practically stumble upon. We recommend popping in for a bite at Blue Eyed Marys. Trek your way up the hill toward Artisan Square, where you’ll discover plenty of offerings from an array of local businesses and galleries before tucking into a stuffed grilled Panini from Artisan Eats Cafe & Bakery. Might we suggest you order the Grilled Croque Monsieur or go for the meat-laden Soprano?

See
Given the coastal climate and proximity to the mainland, why not throw your bike or hiking boots into the car for a bit of exercise and exploration when visiting Bowen Island? Who says you can only enjoy these activities during the warmer months? Venture out to the trails around Killarney Lake or check out the Fishladder by Bridal Veil Falls, which offers great camping during the summer.

Some of you might think we’re crazy, but you can still get out and enjoy a little water sport action on Bowen Island. Kayak rentals are located just next to the ferries, which provide full service tours, outfitting, and introductory lessons year-round.

Do
Not so much into the outdoors? Bowen Island is also the perfect excuse to get a little retail therapy. Artisan Square is host to a smattering of unique shops and boutiques if you’re looking for something a little bit different. Trek over to Alderwood Farm if you’re looking for a fresh take on organic, locally sourced goodies to load up on before heading back to the city.

Stay
Looking for a place to stay? Though the island doesn’t have a full-scale resort hotel, there are plenty of swanky B&Bs, as well as rental cottages, bound to suit your fancy. We like the cozy, ruggedness offered at the Bowen Treetops Suite, a self-contained country suite with panoramic views. Or go for something a bit more modern and check out the Bowen Island Boutique Beach House, which has all the plush fixings you could want, including private beach access and hot tub. Both offer WiFi, so you’ll still be able to sneak in social media updates.
