Executive Reads: Shannon Skinner

Shannon Skinner is an author, consultant, speaker, host of the web TV talk show, Extraordinary Women TV with Shannon Skinner, and a contributing blogger to the Huffington Post. What she has discovered along her journey is that the foundation of business success is – first and foremost – to feel successful as a person. These books are some of her inspirational sources…

The Artists Way by Julia Cameron
Cameron’s popular book played a big role in starting my journey of personal development and spiritual awakening; that is, waking up to the idea that there is a higher power at play and how to tap into it. When I first read the book, not long after it was published, it was during an uncertain time in my life. To relieve my stress and angst, I would play my piano. Then one evening, as I was composing music, I had wondered how my fingers knew where to go on the keyboard without consciously placing them. I began to question what creativity is and where it comes from, which eventually led me to The Artists Way. This book opened my mind to a new way of thinking and living. Since, I have dared to spread my creative wings.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
I love to read classics that have stood the test of time. When you read the classics, you resonate with the genius of the authors – and some of that genius is sure to rub off. This inspirational classic, Think and Grow Rich, unearths the wisdom and secrets to wealth success of Andrew Carnegie, the inspiration behind the book, and many other notable men. Still today it resonates and continues to inspire those who desire to achieve success. Although the book has a focus on achievements of men, as a modern woman, I had to get beyond any “sexism” judgements and recognize the era it was written. Once I was able to that, I could focus on and appreciate the timeless wisdom it offers.

The Whispering Heart: Your Inner Guide to Creativity, by Shannon Skinner
I would be remiss if I did not include my own book. Based on my own journey of self-development and creative expression, I wrote The Whispering Heart: Your Inner Guide to Creativity, which is, at its basic core, a life-guidance book. If you wish to unlock your creative power, make your dreams a reality and live a meaningful life, this book provides the practical tools to get you there. What does the heart have to do with creativity? The heart has wisdom and holds the key to our success. The whisper of your heart is your inner guide because it knows what your true creative desires are. Your job is to listen. When I listened to my heart, it led to me launch my web TV talk show, Extraordinary Women TV with Shannon Skinner.
