National was bumping Monday, September 10 for the Annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Shucking Competition. With it’s large open concept, and of course its fantastic Oyster Bar, National was a natural choice for this year’s event.
The room was packed with a combination of Calgary YPs and individuals from the food and beverage industry. Everyone mingled while sipping pints and eating plates of oysters as they cheer on the competitors.
On site was also Mike Skarbo, the Chef at Flames Central, who was an integral part and host of the event, as well as the Minister of Fisheries who came all the way from P.E.I.
With 24 competitors representing some of the city’s best restaurants, the event was shucking intense. And although each competitor represented amazingly, the top spot went to Colin Metcalfe of Sidewalk Citizen Bakery, who was the fastest, cleanest shucker to present a dozen perfect oysters. Not only did he earn bragging rights, he also received a trophy, $500 and a trip to Charlottetown to compete and represent Calgary in the PEI International Shellfish Festival September 13-16.
The event also kicked off the launch of National’s ‘Buck a Shuck’. For those of you who love oysters and missed the event, head down to National every Tuesday evening for $1 oysters.
