The term “Man Repeller” has never been a desirable term in fashion; that is, until Leandra Medine donned the moniker and has since become a style blogging phenomenon from behind her laptop in New York City. She gained fame and stood out from the fiercely competitive blogging world by perpetuating an unconventional sense of style that “may result in repelling members of the opposite sex.” (Think over-the-top layering, clashing prints, and the revival of any bygone fashion trend you can name.)
Repellant or not, you have to agree that Leandra exudes a calculated and notable style. That’s why Gastown’s ultra chic boutique Secret Location chose her to host an evening of mixing, mingling, and styling. Secret Location made a splash in historic Gastown earlier this year as the city’s first concept store. The sprawling 10,000-square foot space mixes of-the-minute luxury fashion, art, and home wares alongside Tasting Bar, an elegant European inspired Cafe.
The store provided a beautiful and spacious setting where guests were able to sip and shop among the store’s artfully curated collections, ranging from clocks to couture gowns. The Notable team arrived early to find the room already full with an excited crowd of stylish young professionals eager to meet Leandra. Twitter was abuzz earlier in the day as the social media savvy pondered the all-important question: “What are you going to wear?” The consensus seemed to be the most adventurous, creative and fashion-forward outfit one’s wardrobe could produce.
Leandra sipped champagne and snapped photos with her well-dressed admirers (and with over 100,000 Twitter followers, she has no shortage of fans), while the room moved to the tunes of DJ Nina Mendoza. As the night drew to a close, Secret Location’s signature blue bags trailed behind those guests lucky enough to have made a purchase under the style influence of the Man Repeller herself.
