Embrace the Birkenstock Trend for Spring/Summer 2014

One of the most sensible and enduring shoe brands has officially been accepted by the fashion industry’s elite. Once considered a tree hugger’s footwear of choice, top designers such as Rebecca Minkoff, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Marni, Lanvin and many more have showcased Birkenstocks or Birkenstock-inspired footwear. The French fashion label Celine is mostly responsible for the inauguration of the “furkenstocks,” a fur-trimmed version that was featured in their SS13 collection.

This season, adorned interpretations such as Giambattista Valli’s studded slip-ons and Lanvin’s holographic woven sandals add a contemporary edge to the classic look, but the streamlined versions remain the most chic. Though the two-strap silhouette is the most traditional of the Birkenstock style, the T-strap is a slimming shape worn by many fashionistas including the Olsen twins, Heidi Klum and Miranda Kerr. Rachel Zoe was seen wearing a pair during New York Fashion Week and Ashton Kutcher has been sporting his sandals all around town.

How do young professionals wear this season’s carefree slip-on? Counterpoint the look by pairing with a tailored dress pant or a feminine frock, or opt for a more polished look with a metallic or patent element. The risktakers have sported floral and printed pairs and some are now accessorizing the sandals with socks. Even fashion-forward men are slipping on the 239-year-old German sandal. Menswear brands such as Givenchy, Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen and J. Crew and have helped to turn this once anti-fashion style chic.

The Birkenstock offers a trendy yet laid-back option for both everyday strolls through the street and struts down the catwalk.
