Edmonton Woman Crushes Competition, Becomes First Female to Win 125-Kilometre Canadian ‘Death Race’

Edmonton runner Alissa St Laurent is the first woman to win the Canadian Death Race.

And yes, the race’s name is perfectly justified.

For 15 years, the Canadian Death Race has led runners on a 125-kilometre journey through the Albertan Rocky Mountains, crossing numerous rivers and three summits – climbing some 5,000-metres along the way.

“It was something I wanted, something I wanted to see happen,” St Laurent told CBC News.

Not only did she win the race, she completely crushed the competition. Her closest solo competitor finished an hour and a half after St Laurent crossed the finish line in just shy of 14 gruelling hours.

“A lot of women hold that back, that competitive drive. I’d like to see it more,” says Laurent, who came close to winning several other Canadian races earlier this year as a warm-up for the ultramarathon.

And just like that, your 5k this long weekend is suddenly meaningless.
