With Easter weekend just a few days away, many of us are gearing up for a long weekend of egg hunts, too much food, and maybe even the milestone of meeting our significant other’s family.

And we all know that making a good first impression is key – which means the way you present yourself can make or break the experience.  If you’re hoping to make this a Good Friday rather than a Last Supper with your SO’s fam, you’d better read on…

1. Scope It Out
Ask your boyfriend or girlfriend about the type of plans, environment, and atmosphere to make sure you’re prepared. Nothing’s worse than showing up at a fancy family dinner in boyfriend jeans and a t-shirt – no matter how cute they may be. Also be sensitive to any strong family values (read: don’t wear fur to a house full of vegans).
2. Follow the 3 “Cs”

That’s conservative, classic, and classy – not cheap, controversial, and cleavage-bearing. Timeless is always better than trendy since the chances of grandma appreciating the harem pants or wedge sneakers is pretty low.
3. Pack Appropriate Overnight Gear

Staying the night? Pack conservative pyjamas. While you’re not likely to be seen in them, a midnight trip to the bathroom in a lacy nightie may go from risqué to risky if you run into anyone en route.
4. Take it Down a Notch

Go easy on the makeup, jewelry, and scents. Many people are allergic to fragrance and smelling like a walking department store isn’t cute on anyone.
5. Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches

Pressed, clean, and snag-free clothes, well-groomed hair, fresh breath, and tidy nails will keep you looking polished.
6. Be Comfortable

Wear something you love and feel comfortable in. You want to look and feel like you, and the more comfortable you are, the more relaxed and at ease you’ll be.

7. Personalize

Personalize your outfit with something special to you, whether it be vintage jewelry from your grandmother, or a blouse in your favourite colour. This can be a great conversation starter and shows a more personal side.
8. Relax

And that means smile too. Confidence and poise go a long way. If you’re nervous, fake it till you make it! This is an exciting step in your relationship so savour it…if you can get over your nerves.
