Don’t Apply: These Are the 10 Worst Cities in Canada to Get a Job

Oh, dear – how did we get here?

A city that was once a beacon of employment just one year ago, Kelowna has dropped pretty much every rung of the labour market ladder to top this year’s list of the absolute worst cities in Canada to land a job.

The city fell 31 spots and sits dead last for job prospects out of 33 major urban areas surveyed nationwide.

It currently boasts a 7.2 per cent unemployment rate and lost 2.2 per cent of its jobs over the last year while population grew 1.7 per cent over the same period. It’s also the only B.C. city in the top 10.

Peterborough, Ontario ranked second-worst for employment followed by Calgary, which is the largest city among the top 10. The full ranking, which was published by BMO, below:

Peterborough, Ontario
Down 24 spots on BMO ranking, to 27th place.

Calgary, Alberta
Down 19 spots on BMO ranking, to 23rd place.
Number of jobs down 2.3% in a year.
Jobless rate: 7.7%

St. John’s, Newfoundland
Down 14 spots on BMO ranking, to 25th place.
Number of jobs down 4.3% in a year.
Jobless rate: 6.7%

Kitchener, Ontario
Down 12 spots on BMO ranking, to 21st place.

Jobless rate: 6.5%

Sudbury, Ontario
Down 11 spots on BMO ranking, to 33rd place.
Number of jobs down 7% in a year.
Jobless rate: 8.6%

Barrie, Ontario
Down 9 spots on BMO ranking, to 19th place.

Jobless rate: 6.4%

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Down 7 spots on BMO ranking, to 12th place.

Jobless rate: 6.1%

Brantford, Ontario
Down 6 spots on BMO ranking, to 20th place.
Number of jobs down 3.5% in a year.
Jobless rate: 5.8%

Halifax, Nova Scotia
Down 5 spots on BMO ranking, to 17th place.
