Dating a Vegan: Tips for a Veggielicious Dinner Date in Toronto

As a gluten-free vegan, there is nothing more awkward than being taken to a super nice restaurant on a first date and having to cause a bit of a fuss because of dietary restrictions. I’ve been through it too many times to count – crusty gluten-filled bread with butter, chicken stock in soups, cheese in absolutely everything – all leaving me with one option just to be easy: a salad. While I have really learned to accept my limitations when eating at the average fine-dining establishment, I don’t want to give you the wrong impression… I can eat more than a salad!

It is nice to be treated once in a while to a dinner where you can eat more than one thing on the menu. So listen up, guys (and girls), if you want to REALLY impress someone like me, skip Sotto Sotto, Morton’s or anywhere they serve half a cow on a plate and go for something a lot simpler.

After all, there is nothing sexier than a man who his eats veggies.

Here are three awesome options for dates to impress gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarians, vegans and the like:

Grasslands
This trendy revamp of Fressen on Queen Street is the perfect compromise of great vegan food and the fine-dining experience. This beautifully finished spot has a large bar and accompanying cocktail selection. Their menu has lots of delicious tapas-style appetizers, bar snacks and intricately presented mains. They have just recently re-opened their doors are sure to impress with this new look and feel. They are open Wednesday-Sunday for dinner, drinks and a good time.

Live Food Bar
One of my personal favourites! The words organic, gluten-free and vegan are music to my ears. Their menu is half cooked food and half raw, so you can try both. That way you are still being adventurous without committing to a fully raw meal. Besides the organic wines and gluten-free beers, they also have a wide variety of fresh juices and smoothies, so there is really something for everyone. Perhaps the most exciting part is their ever-changing dessert selection. This mid-town spot is great for a lunch or dinner date and perhaps a romantic walk up to Castle Loma.

Rawlicious
If you want to show her you are easygoing and into trying new things, then Rawlicious would make a great date. They feature 100% raw dishes in the most creative way. Each dish is a work of art in both taste and presentation. Eating raw is not as unappetizing as it sounds, it is actually quite delicious; just keep an open mind. They have several locations to choose from, but I have personally visited the Yorkville location and I quite liked it. Rawlicious would be perfect for lunch or dinner coupled with a stroll around Yorkville.

So now you know: all ladies should and can eat more than just salads. You just have to have a little foresight and sacrifice a little and she will love you for it! You might even save some money in the process.
