Electronic masterminds Cut Copy were in town last week to tour their latest album, Free Your Mind, which was released last fall. This Aussie group is synonymous with cool club classics like Lights & Music, Need You Now and Hearts On Fire, and are known for their high energy performances. The newest album has been described by critics as a continuation of the breezier, more festival-ready 80s pop that we previously heard from the 2011 Zonoscope. Of course we also have to mention the great music video featuring the chiselled figure of True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard playing a modern-day Jesus in a cult of hippies wearing track suits (definitely worth watching).

The Calgary show had an electro-disco feel (or is that nu-disco?) along the lines of James Murphy’s recent DJ sets and the electro-tech mixtapes of Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza. Cut Copy’s new wave dance-punk show was scheduled to go down at Flames Central but was relocated at the last minute to a smaller, more intimate venue; and while it was their first show in Calgary, and it was a Monday, the crowd mirrored the band’s energy.

The dance floor was packed and it was one of those moments where you thank your lucky stars that you and your friends were a mere four feet away from such an awesome musical force. Next up for these guys is Primavera Sound in Barcelona, followed by mega summer festivals including Bonnaroo, Osheaga Festival, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands.

Also worth mentioning is Vancouver’s young electro group Bear Mountain, who opened the show. This young West Coast band headlined at Commonwealth back on Valentine’s Day and was one of the few who squeezed in their Sled Island show before the flood last year. Make sure to check out their cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World.

Mondays can be a tough night to make it out, so if you missed the Cut Copy show you can stream the latest album here
