Coming Up: Noteworthy Art Shows

We’re always up for a little artistic cultural infusion into our young professional lives, and we’ve definitely got lots to choose from with several notable shows coming up this and next month.  We’ve rounded up a shortlist and urge you to consider getting out one afternoon or evening to support the creative works of emerging and established artists like those mentioned here.

Vancouver Design Bureau is set to unveil its inaugural show, Perched: A Birdhouse Exhibition, as part of a pop-up exhibition this Friday. Perched is a unique showing of the collective works of more than a dozen designers, and features birdhouses made to reflect each individual artist’s approach, imagination and sense of aesthetics shaped by their own interactions with nature. The exhibit launches with a gala event taking place this tonight (September 21) from 7pm until late at Maai Living, located at 157 W. Hastings. Attendees can expect an appearance by The DJ Trike to help keep the party going…and if you don’t know what that entails, get a taste here.

Museum of Vancouver (MOV) is also set to launch their newest exhibit titled Object(ing): The art/design of Tobias Wong. This special show looks at everyday objects that have been granted greater meaning through the oftentimes ‘humorous’ eyes and workings of artist Tobias Wong.

Coming up later this month (and worth a quick trip over to the North Shore) is Sans Brush (September 28 to October 20th) at the CityScape Community Art Space. This collective exhibit (featuring the work of 25 different artists) explores the unconventional process of painting – without a brush. It aims to lend insight into alternative tools and painting techniques that add to depth, shape and styles.  Catch the opening reception and take in a demonstrative painting on September 27th at 335 Lonsdale Ave.

If you’re up for something a little different, you might want to pencil in the return of Raw Canvas’ 2nd Annual Art Battle, returning to Vancouver on October 2nd.  After much anticipation and applause, this fun-fuelled event brings together local and international artists who get to work on their canvas with several rounds of live competitive painting for prizes. If this has got your inner Picasso tempted, learn more about the details here.
