Cavalia Comes to Calgary

Every summer we revel in the fantastic performances and showmanship that’s part and parcel of the Calgary stampede. While we’re still a few months away from enjoying July days and nights on the fairways and grounds, there’s something coming to town that might tide you over. Cavalia Odysseo begins on April 23 (the 600th performance) and will offer spectators an exciting display of equestrian riding, dance, music and gravity-defying acrobatics. This is a visually stunning mix that is one part Stampede and one part Cirque de Soleil.

If you’ve driven past Canada Olympic Park recently you’ve probably seen the big top being erected, a task that has required 80 staff. This colossal tent is the biggest of its kind in the world right now and, sitting close to 40 meters tall, was custom designed with the central masts being removed so that the floor space would be free of obstacles for the horses and performers. To give you perspective of the space, the arena is more than twice the size of two standard football fields.

In order to pull off such a spectacular show, the Cavalia team consists of choreographers, set and costume designers, art directors, make up and hair stylists and equestrian directors. The team who is responsible for the stage direction is very familiar with the spectacle, having worked with Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift to coordinate superstar performances. Audiences will be wowed with 3D forests and moving skylines. Horse lovers will be challenged to keep track of all the different breeds on display throughout the evening. There are roughly 70 different horses featured in Cavalia, including a sequence with a full size merry-go-round.

Cavalia Odysseo will be running until June 1st with matinee and evening shows and is sure to entertain everyone. Purchase your tickets today and get ready to take in one exciting show!
