The face behind The Edgy Veg, Candice Hutchings, is a YouTuber, an author of her very own cookbook, a lover of animals and the ultimate vegan chef gracing her followers with delicious, unique vegan recipes that even the biggest meat eater will love!
What does your job as a chef and YouTuber entail?
I show people awesome vegan food that also happens to taste really good – vegan food that even people who eat meat will enjoy!
How did you get into this?
First and foremost, I was a foodie and really lived my life through food. I went vegan 9 years ago and there wasn’t really anywhere to find bomb vegan food. I decided to teach myself how to cook, take some online courses and basically learn how to cook through YouTube – which led me to create my own channel.
What makes your job #CareerGoals?
I get to travel the world, make my own schedule, hang out with my dogs all day and ultimately make a difference in the world by helping the animals and planet.
How does this career feed into your overall life goals?
I live my goals and my passion every single day. I eat really great food, I help advocate for animals which I love and adore (I have two pets) and I help the planet which I am super passionate about. I am literally living my truth!
What are the steps you took to creating a successful YouTube channel and following?
I took my YouTube channel (which really started out as a hobby and a place to keep recipes) and turned it into my career. I had one of my videos go viral, but I also took all of the things I had learned at school in Marketing and Integrated Communications and applied that to a cool medium, which at the time no one had really heard of before.
How would someone get into this career?
It’s important to know who you are, who your brand is and to work really hard. Everyone thinks they can become an internet sensation overnight, but I have been doing this for 9 years, full time for 3 years – it takes time. Work your butt off, stay consistent and always deliver to your audience.
What type of person or personality is suited for what you do?
You would think that it is an extrovert, however, I am an introverted extrovert. You just have to be yourself. When I first started I was really camera shy, but eventually got really comfortable through practice. It also helps to be a little bit of a perfectionist as well.
What are three tips for being successful?
- 1. Be consistent
- 2. Be honest
- 3. Do something that means something!
Tell us a secret about your job?
I wear pajamas all day! I’ll have on the nicest shirt and makeup on top and pajamas on the bottom!
Anything exciting coming up?
What’s coming up on the channel is a new series called “level up vegan” where I take vegan food, normal ingredients, like mac-and-cheese and do three levels of it. I am also doing a food demo at the allergy free Expo in Toronto in February.
