Capilano Suspension Bridge Celebrates 125th Anniversary

Last week we made our way over to the North Shore to check out one of the Lower Mainland’s top tourist destinations, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which were ready to celebrate its 125th anniversary in true West Coast style

Always up for playing tourist in our own town, the sunshine blazing overhead was an added touch to the perfect afternoon to ditch desk duty in favour of a little outdoors R&R. So we set off for some exploring (and plenty of mingling) alongside several hundred guests invited to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Capilano Suspension Bridge.

We can clearly see why visitors flock to the 27-acre park year after year. Built by George Grant Mackay in 1888, Capilano Suspension Bridge (now owned by the Stibbard familly) features a host of unique adventures and stunning sights to take in. Beyond the actual Suspension Bridge itself (nearly 140 meters of it), the park features a maze of seven different viewing platforms knit together by a network of suspension bridges supported by 1300-year-old Douglas Fir trees as part of their Treetops Adventure.

In addition to this, the park boasts a relatively new thrillseekers stroll dubbed ‘Cliffwalk’ that basically follows a granite precipice along the gushing Capilano River and uses a labyrinth-like series of narrow cantilevered bridges, stairs and platforms for touring.  You might want to skip lunch, ’cause this baby’s not for the faint of heart – but is so much fun you just have to go for it.

Onto the celebrations, though. Guests enjoyed spirited live musical performances, local craft brews, wines and non-stop circulating trays of delicious bites (all part of their catering menu).

We noshed on everything from prawns to oysters, deluxe mac & cheese to Waldorf salad accompanied by sliders and maybe just a few cupcake treats to top it off (hey, we skipped breakfast and lunch for this).

To sweeten the celebrations, an obligatory birthday cake was presented and the founding family took over the mic to say a few words before announcing a huge contest.

To seriously kick-start wedding season, the Capilano Group of Companies used the party as an opportunity to announce a huge dream wedding giveaway worth $20,000.

Here’s the noteworthy scoop: entrants need to create a video showing why they should win and enter it online on the official Facebook page

The Grand Prize includes a wedding ceremony at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, reception at Stanley Park Pavilion, and four-night honeymoon at Cathedral Mountain Lodge and Moraine Lake Lodge in the Canadian Rockies.

Contest ends Aug 31, 2014.
