We were left in a state of perplexity two weeks ago when it was announced that Sting – instead of, say, Drake – was going to headline this past weekend’s NBA All-Star game halftime show.
Perhaps what we should really have wished for was that Drake perform our national anthem, an honour bestowed upon and subsequently sullied by Nelly Furtado.
Furtado chose to take her rendition of ‘O Canada’ some sort of chopped and screwed route, slowing it down to an un-singalong-able pace:
Two things: the flute was excellent; and at 1.5x speed, it’s actually pretty decent.
Most Canadians, however, were not so pleased with the creative liberty Furtado expressed in singing the anthem, as was evident by reaction on social media:
YKNOW I NEVER HEARD A THIS NELLY FURTADO BUT IM GUESSIN THEY ONLY ASKED HER TA SING BECAUSE ANN MURRAY WAS BUSY

Nelly Furtado had 10 years to warm up her vocals…she has no excuse for that performance ? — Kristina (@kristinamariano) February 15, 2016

On behalf of Canadians everywhere, we’d like to nominate Nelly Furtado’s version of our great anthem as the worst play of day @TSN_Sports — Ian Esplen (@IanEsplen) February 15, 2016
Is Nelly Furtado having a breakdown?
That’s about the worst performance of the Canadian Anthem I’ve ever heard…— Michael Wilbon (@RealMikeWilbon) February 15, 2016
Ouch. Obviously Mr. Wilbon hasn’t heard this.
