Canada Will Get a New Loonie Design in 2017

Ah, the loonie – a decades-long staple of Canadiana, like the Leafs not making the playoffs.

But next year, our beloved dollar coin is getting a makeover.

The new loonie will commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday and will feature a winning design by St. Catharines native Wesley Klassen.

Klassen won a contest launched by The Royal Canadian Mint earlier this year that asked Canadians to help decide what should be featured on next year’s edition of the loonie.

The design will show on the back side of the 2017 loonie and features landmarks such as the Lion’s Gate Bridge, the CN Tower, and Quebec City’s Chateau Frontenac Hotel.

“[It illustrates] the iconic engineering achievements which dominate our landscape from east to west — all of which is connected by railroad,” said Klassen of the design. “It’s an amazing honour to have my artwork displayed on the 2017 one-dollar coin and this will make my memories of Canada 150 that much more special for me and my family.”

All five winning designs from the contest will grace the 2017-dated two-dollar, one-dollar, 25-cent, 10-cent and 5-cent coins respectively.
