Calgary Weekender: September 27 through 29, 2013

Friday

YYC Fashion Show
YYC Fashion Week is happening and there will be a fashion show at C-SPACE on Friday night (1720 30th Avenue SW) that’s definitely worth attending. The show kicks off at 6:30pm with entertainment by circus and fire performer SaFire and hip-hop group Jazzlib Collective. There will be five designers showing off their runway collections, including Boa -Ba, Averynthe and Laura George, as well as an after-party at Black Betty Wine and Burger Bar following the show. Black Betty is open late and can be a great place to meet up with friends. To learn more about the designers or to get your ticket, click here.

Detroit Bikes and some Rock n Roll
Broken City is hosting the Detroit Bikes Launch Party on September 27th. Detroit Bikes is a project of Broken City’s owner, who has recently relocated to Detroit. These bikes are made for touring, recreational riding and commuting. Bands Napalmpom, LBJS and Double Fuzz will be rocking this free event. Double Fuzz is one hell of a local blues-rock duo and definitely worth the trip down. Doors are at 9pm, so you have time to stop in at District Tavern next door for one of their signature beers along with a bucket of bacon and maple syrup.

Saturday

PechaKucha
Calgary Arts Development presents PechaKucha Night. The theme of this presentation is all about ‘Rocks’… or should we say, ‘Things That Rock’? Come out and be enlightened by the wide range of guest speakers that will include Brad Himour (an archaeologist for Parks Canada), Darren MacLean (Owner of downtownfood), Brian Milne (Board Chair of Sled Island), Jett Thunders (CJSW’s mascot) and Douglas Walker (Director of World Rock Paper Scissors Society). The event will be held at C-Space (1720 30th Ave. SW). Tickets are $10 and presentations begin at 7pm. To buy tickets, click here

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

Calgary International Film Festival
This weekend is your last chance to check out one of the many wonderful films at the Calgary International Film Festival. There are 200+ films playing throughout the festival with over 30 different genres to choose from. This is a chance to see both local and international cinema at its best. Tickets for each show are $13 and festivalgoers have the chance to get a discount on some late-night eats and drinks from downtownfood (right across from the Globe Theatre). Phantom Wing
From the brilliant collective of artists who brought you Wreck City (the nine houses worth of art installations in Kensington) comes Phantom Wing, a pre-demolition art show that showcases artwork you probably wouldn’t see in a traditional gallery. Artists will be setting up their art and installation in the abandoned wing of the King Edward School, slated for demolition in the near future. There will be performances by local bands Devonian Gardens and Surf Kitties. The many fabulous restaurants and coffee shops of Marda Loop are just a hop, skip and a jump from the event. Learn more about Phantom Wing here.
