Calgary Weekender: September 26 through 28, 2014

Whether you’re looking to mix art with wine or discovering some of the city’s coolest venues is more your thing, you’ll find something for every taste in this edition of the Weekender. Speaking of taste, there’s a little thing called Pizza Week happening too, which you might want to check out…

Thursday

Vine Styles x PARK
Start your weekend off early with an art party compliments of PARK (Promoting Artists/Redefining Kulture). Artist Stephen Ferris is showcasing his latest collection of eye-catching abstracts in the Vine Styles Kensington Wine Shop from 5pm to 9pm. Once you’ve had an opportunity to sip, nosh and admire Ferris’ works, you can head next door to the Kensington Wine Bar for the after party. Being tired on Friday will be totally worth it.

Saturday

Picnic
If you love the Cliff Bungalow area of town, then put this one on your calendar. Picnic happens September 27th in Cliff Bungalow Park and is a welcome opportunity for people to enjoy the green space, buy produce from a farmers’ market, see local bands rock out in the community garden, and pick up some new art collectables from vendors. To really start Saturday morning off right, you can also participate in the 10am yoga class. We’ll see you there.

Saturday/Sunday

Open Doors
This weekend you can snoop to your heart’s content when the city opens its doors to the public. From the Northeast to the Southwest, you’ll be invited to explore hospitals, airplanes, ice houses where Olympians train, culinary institutes where top-notch chefs shine, and historic homes that were residence to some of the people we credit with making Calgary what it is today. After this weekend you’ll have a totally unique appreciation for what makes this city awesome.

Sunday

Get Your Green Thumb
Sundays mean different things to different people. It can mean a good sleep-in, runny eggs to cure a hangover, or it could mean attending a terrarium workshop at Plant, Inglewood’s one and only plant shop. If you need to find a way to bring greenery to your living situation, then we seriously recommend you attend this workshop. Learn how to make your own succulent display and how to care for your plants once you get them home. This is going to be some good, clean fun. The workshop begins at 11am and tickets are available on the website

All Weekend

Pizza Week

Oh, hell yes. Starting on Friday we’re celebrating our first-ever YYC Pizza Week – your excuse to sample everything of the ham, pineapple, and pepperoni and mozzarella persuasion. Close to 40 restaurants citywide are going to be bringing their A-game when it comes to the art of deep crust. For classic Italian you’ll want to check out Posto and UNA, but for something adventurous, spots like Grumans, Blowfish and Anejo are a must. To see all the participating restaurants, visit the website. Proceeds from this special event go to Meals on Wheels (a fantastic cause).

CIFF
If you still haven’t made it out for the Calgary International Film Festival, then you still have this weekend to take in a little silver screen culture. The film Bronx Obama is a sure winner and will please all moviegoers. Based on a guy who’s down on his luck and out of a job, this story becomes a true Cinderella tale when he realizes that he bears a striking resemblance to President Barak Obama. Armed with wit and resourcefulness, Louis Ortiz changes his life forever when he decides to become a political impersonator.
