Calgary Weekender: September 23rd through 25th 2011

This weekend, there is a ton of notable happenings in our fair city, especially when it comes to visual arts and cinema. So grab your Notable friends and take advantage of the following great shows and the networking opportunities that come along…

Calgary is abuzz as it kicks off the Calgary International Film Festival. Over the course of 10 days (it runs from September 23rd to October 2nd) the city will play host to an incredible list of films from more than 100 countries. Categories and genres range from Family and American Indie to World Cinema and Music On Film.

CIFF locations are all within the city’s core and are within walking distance of one another, making it easy to bounce from show to show. These spots include The Globe, The Plaza, Eau Claire Cineplex, Calgary Public Library, and the Global Business Centre. Check out the CIFF site to plan your days and catch some amazing cinematic masterpieces. Hopefully the only duds in your future will be those of ‘Milk’.

After catching a show, why not check out one of the CIFF ‘hot spots’, a list comprised of a collection of local pubs, bars and restaurants that honour film fest fans with special CIFF promotions and exclusive food and drink offers. Notable restaurants including WURST, Double Zero, and JAROblue provide the perfect meeting place for attendees, delegates and guests for dinner or a night-cap. Who knows who you might bump into while sipping a martini…

Between films, we also recommend heading to the Glenbow Museum. Their current exhibit Cut! Costume and the Cinema features 43 costumes made by renowned British costumer, Cosprop Ltd., from 25 films and is the perfect addition to a weekend of cinema. See up close the very costumes worn by movie stars such as Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Jude Law in films including Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Neverland and Sherlock Holmes.

This noteworthy exhibit is on display for the first time in Canada and will only be at the Glenbow until September 28th, so take advantage of this opportunity. Why wouldn’t you want to check out what the stars wore, you’ll be amazed at how tiny the outfits seem to be…

So grab some friends and support some of the city’s most influential organizations in regards to Calgary’s cultural fabric. It’s notable, don’t you know…?
