Calgary Weekender: September 20 through 23, 2012

For Calgary young professionals, this weekend is full of exciting events, shows and places to hit up.

Though not technically the weekend yet, Thursday evening has a ton of stuff happening. For the fashionable YP, we suggest checking out the Fall Designer Sample Sale. This is a huge sample sale with over 60,000 units of inventory, priced 40% to 80% off. Head to the Days Inn (3828 Macleod Trail SE) Thursday to have first pick at this awesome sale. For those of you who can’t make, it the sale will be taking place throughout the weekend as well.

If you love music, we have a couple great options. Into roots and rockabilly music? Calgary favourite, The Sadler-Brown Trio, will be performing in an intimate setting at the Oak Tree Pub (124 10 St NW). More of a folk lover? Calgary Alum Brent Tyler is in town performing at Wine-Ohs on his Big Love tour.

Friday evening, head to Theatre Junction Grand  (608 1 St SW) to catch ‘13 Most Beautiful… Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests’. Filmed between 1964 and 1966, Andy Warhol shot approximately 500 Screen Tests on film, revealing portraits of subjects. Inspired by his work, ’90s rock icons Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips have composed a live score for a selection of Warhol’s silent film portraits.

The Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) has hit Calgary (September 20 – 30). One of the largest film festivals in Canada and a premiere cultural event in Calgary, it’s a festival of visual arts and cinema with screenings of over 200 multi-genre films from more than 100 countries in categories that include Feature, Short, and Documentary. Other categories and genres range from Family and American Indie to World Cinema and Music On Film. Of course there will also be a series of gala events, awards ceremonies, and special presentations.

After checking out a show, pop into one of the festival hot spots, including Ox and Angela, Double Zero or River Cafe, to name a few.

Saturday brings you the 33rd Annual Melissa’s Road Race (http://www.melissasroadrace.ca/) in Banff. For those running in it, good luck, and for those who aren’t, it’s a great opportunity to get out of the city, cheer on racers and enjoy the mountain air. While there, why not pop into The Bison for lunch?

Saturday evening, it’s time to paint the town red for the Heart Truth Fashion Show, taking place at Eighth Avenue Place (
525 – 8 Ave SW). Watch some of Canada′s finest celebrities and VIPs rock red couture dresses (the official symbol of The Heart Truth campaign) created by select fashion designers in support of The Heart and Stroke Foundation. The event will also showcase a fall/winter fashion show from Chinook Centre and the well-known Calgary-based Canadian fashion designer Paul Hardy. Come check out some fashion and you support the importance of heart health.

Head to Belgo Brasserie after the show for the official after party. The room will be jammed with the city’s top YPs, VIPs and celebrities and will also feature Canadian Artist James Wyper and Miami DJ Yanik Coen.
