Calgary Weekender: September 11 through 14, 2014

Thursday

TELUS Spark Adults Only
We’re sorry to bring you more science-related events, but this one will go easy on you and includes lots and lots of wine. The monthly Adults Only Night at TELUS Spark always features a licensed bar and a DJ, and no matter your relationship status, it should serve as a pretty perfect date activity. If you’re looking for a different way to spend a Thursday night, then make a trip to the southeast.

Friday

Inglewood Night Market
Late summer weather is coming back for Friday, so head down to Inglewood for their final Night Market of the year. Go for a low-key stroll through the closed street beside Gravity, where artisans and other clever local vendors mix with food trucks and other treats. For the more energetic, there’s a DJ and dance party happening too, with a Just Dance competition on a big screen. Oh, and a giant flaming octopus. (Blame Beakerhead, obviously).

Saturday

18 Degrees of Jazz
If you’re looking for a more sophisticated way to spend your Saturday night, look no further than this event at Saltlik in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters Calgary. This jazz evening is set up for a non-jazz crowd, as Ellen Doty and her seven-piece live band will play an array of songs you’ll recognize from other genres with a slick, smoky twist. The food will be above par, and don’t miss the tap performance by Decidedly Jazz Danceworks midway through the evening. General admission tickets are still available and worth snapping up quickly.

HiFi
This one is completely free of anything science related, we promise. Unless you consider rocking a dance floor a science. This week is “Back to School” at HiFi, so every night is featuring some of your favourite local DJs as they welcome fall weather by heating up one of Calgary’s foremost dance spots. Saturday night, they’re bringing in San Fran’s Avalon Emerson, which should draw a decent crowd. Don’t think too much about this one – just get ready to move.

All Weekend

Beakerhead
The engineers are coming! And in true engineer fashion, they’re coming in droves and obnoxiously taking over every element of city life, from your favourite restaurants and theatres to major public spaces and landmarks. Thankfully, they brought artists with them and are actually putting on some very cool events that we would be remiss to not mention. Perhaps most exciting is the chance to take a ferris wheel ride while enjoying a gourmet dinner (blankets provided if it stays cold). Or check out a musical virtual tour of a massive 3D brain with Jay Ingram and the Free Radicals on Friday and Saturday night at Telus SPARK.

Banff Lake Louise Fall Festival
If the weather earlier this week got you down, cheer up and get out of town by heading to the Banff Lake Louise Fall Festival. Hikers will rejoice at the gorgeous sights of snow on the mountaintops (prepare accordingly) as there are several guided hikes and challenges this weekend. If curling up by the fire with a warm bevie is more your thing, many of the local hotels and resorts are offering package deals and special rates, as well as culinary events to warm your belly and heart.
