Calgary Weekender: October 5 through 7, 2012

It definitely feels like fall in Calgary, and rightly so considering this weekend is Thanksgiving. Although we are sure there will be a fair number of young professionals enjoying turkey feasts and time spent with family, we do have several suggestions of what to do with your long weekend.

For those who work in the city’s core, there will be a fantastic Thanksgiving Market taking place on the 100 & 200 blocks of Stephen Avenue from 10am to 5pm, Thursday and Friday. This ‘one stop shop’ market will have everything you could want for delicious fall flavours. Vendors will include Cruffs House of Creampuffs, Make Cheese Inc and Manuel Latruwe Belgian Patisserie and Bread Shop.

Friday evening we suggest heading to the Haight Gallery (2018 24 Ave NW) for the opening reception of Second Skin, a solo exhibition of new works by Andrea Williamson.

Or explore childhood memories, but with a new perspective, by checking out “Fairy Tales, Monsters and the Genetic Imagination,” the latest exhibition at the Glenbow Museum  (130 9 Ave SE). Inspired by the fantastic stories and characters of myths, fairy tales and science fiction, the exhibit explores what’s possible when the boundaries between humans and animals become blurred.

Saturday is perfect to rock your favourite frock and head out to PARKLUXE at Hyatt Auto Gallery Mercedes Benz (909 15 St SW). This luxury fashion show is a fundraiser for Calgary-based arts organization PARK, and will be co-hosted by the Hyatt Auto Gallery Mercedes Benz. Featuring four of Calgary’s top high-end fashion designers, Lauren Bagliore, Caitlin Power, Nicole Campre, and Anne Bacalso, you will definitely be inspired. Stick around apres for the official after party featuring international model and DJ Miss Nine.

For those who are prepared to brave the cold, along with their fears, we suggest checking out Screamfest. This is Calgary’s premiere Halloween festival and carnival of carnage and will be happening every weekend throughout October at its new home in Stampede Park. This year will feature six haunted houses, two rides and numerous FestEvil vendors. For the daring, get lost in the Maze of Madness and get Buried Alive.

Sunday and Monday are all about being thankful. For those fortunate enough to have family close by, enjoy the quality time. For those YPs who may not have family close or are simply working throughout the weekend, why not grab some friends and host an impromptu Thanksgiving dinner with friends?

For the Martha Stewarts out there, you should have a great selection of ingredients to choose from courtesy of the Thanksgiving Market. For those who would rather enjoy the company instead of sweating it out in the kitchen with a massive turkey, why not hit up Sunterra Market for their take out four-course Thanksgiving dinner? It will include sweet potato and ginger bisque, roasted corn and grape tomato salad, your choice of turkey or ham, and a deep-dish pumpkin pie.

Or really treat yourselves and make a reservation at any number of restaurants in Calgary where you can enjoy great food, wine and, of course, the company…without any of the hassle that comes with preparing a meal. Because really, isn’t the whole point of Thanksgiving about enjoying the company of those around you?
