Calgary Weekender: October 4 through 6, 2013

Friday, October 4
Over two nights, October 4 and 5, 60 original artists will perform in 15 venues throughout Calgary. The list of performances is vast, so click here to narrow down where your sought-after genre will be on display and at what time. Explore the fantastic live music venues we have here in Calgary, from Wine-Ohs downtown to Blues Can, Ironwood and the Festival Hall in Inglewood.

If you’re out in Banff on Friday night, head up to the Banff Centre for the Walter Phillips Gallery opening reception. The exhibition Skirt the parlour, and shun the zoo by Rebecca Brewer, Ursula Mayer, Josée Aubin Ouellette and Lucy Stein runs October 5 to December 15 and examines negotiating public and private realms.

Saturday, October 5
Saturday night, if you notice the city is void of fashionistas, know it’s because they’re all at PARKLUXE, the fashion and art show happening at the TELUS Spark Center (220 St. George’s Drive NE). The show will present the work of local high-end designers’ clothing and accessories. The show features six designers, including former Notable YEDaily Nicole Campre. Doors are at 8pm, the first show starts just after nine, and the second show is set for 9:45pm. Click here for the details.

When you’ve soaked up more fashion than the September issue, and are in the mood for dancing, head on down to The Hifi Club (219 10 Ave SW). The world’s largest DJ completion, Red Bull Thre3style, is having their Canada National Final at Cowboys on Sunday and The Hifi is throwing the Welcome Pre-Party Saturday night. It’ll be hosted by Smalltown DJs, some secret guests, and we hear some of the judges from Sunday’s competition will be playing tunes too.

Sunday, October 6
Tubby Dog (1022 17th Ave SW) is having their 8th Anniversary Party on Sunday night starting at 7pm. The hipper than hip hotdog hangout is celebrating the big day with polka, beer and, of course, hotdogs. There will be free mini-dogs for those who join the party.

If you’re calling Sunday a home day, surf on over to www.freshtival.ca to score your tickets for Into the Mind, the latest ski feature film by the Sherpas, who have some big-time Calgary roots. Following the award-winning film All.I.Can, the Sherpas’ latest production immerses you into the mind of a common skier balancing risk versus reward. It is screening at Calgary’s Freshtival on Friday, October 18, but if you can’t make it that night, you can download the film on iTunes right now. Tickets to the shows on the 18th are also available at Fresh Skis (108 10 Street NW).
