Calgary Weekender: October 25 through 27, 2013

Friday/Saturday/Sunday

La Bohème
Cowtown Opera’s latest show is based on the 19th century Italian opera La Bohème. While the name of the opera remains the same, the Cowtown Opera’s adaptation of La Bohème takes places in modern-day Calgary to help the audience relate a little better. Get ready for an operatic tale of friendship and heartache complete with iPhones and the Ship and Anchor as the backdrop for the story. There may also be mention of a few other iconic Calgary establishments, like Beano and the French Maid. La Bohème runs until October 27hth at Lantern Community Church. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.

Saturday

Apocalypse Party
The Fifth Reel, Zombie Walk and the U of C Film Society are excited to bring you the Zombie Apocalypse Party at the Plaza Theatre on the 26th. Get out the fake blood and come dressed up as a zombie to celebrate the end of civilization. Apparently Peter Jackson made some pretty crazy zombie films before he hit it big with Lord of the Rings. His film Dead Alive will be shown at the party, which has been described as equal parts horror/romance and comedy. The Weir will also be performing at the party. Doors are at 10pm.

Witch CRAFT and Beer?
There is nothing wrong with keeping it simple for Halloween. After all, having to find a costume, dab on fake eyelashes or a bald cap is already so much work. If you are looking for something easy, then you should head to the Witch CRAFT party at CRAFT Beer Market on Saturday night. You can pre-buy tickets for $10, which allows you to happily snack, sample over one hundred different beers, and still have the chance to win costume prizes.

 A Night of Stargazing

If you’re not quite ready for a Halloween party, there are lots of other great ways to spend your Saturday night. The University of Calgary’s Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is throwing a tribute to sci-fi on Saturday evening. There will be local sci-fi writes with readings and there will also be a presentation from the university’s film studies department. Snacks, trivia, music and stargazing will follow. Costumes are still welcome. For tickets: rao@phas.ucalgary.ca.
Please note the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is located in Priddis.
