Be the Boob of the Ball
Maybe we should clarify. Welcome to the 2014 Rethink Breast Cancer Booby Ball that involves an evening of circus-style entertainment with a little bit of glitz and a whole lot of bizarre to raise money for a worthy cause: Breasts. This is a fresh and exciting way to raise awareness for breast cancer, so as the organizers have advised, “grab a drink, loosen your corset, kiss a bearded lady and enjoy.” Rumour has it there will be fortune tellers, lion tamers, acrobats and other carnival-type charades. Tickets are $75 (with a tax receipt).
You might have thought Thanksgiving was over, but this weekend is just bursting with foodie events. Commonwealth (the new unofficial venue for weekend pop-ups) is hosting the Hawker’s Market that will showcase upcoming Calgary restaurants, caterers and food truck operations showcasing their latest meal creations. But that’s not all. There will also be a line-up of live music to keep you happy between snacking. If you’re trying to look for healthy options this fall, CRU juices will be there and can help kick start that cleanse.
Feast in the East
At this point in the season we’ll do whatever we can to take advantage of nice weather. That’s why Feast in the East is such a great idea. On Friday and Saturday you can enjoy East Village’s opening of the St. Patrick’s Bridge while taking in a food truck cooking contest where each kitchen on wheels is given a secret ingredient to cook with. Winners will be announced Saturday afternoon at 2pm. If you live in Bridgeland or any of the other neighbourhoods north of the river, you’ll now be that much closer to walk or bike to the event.
Toast and Jam
Calgary is all about leisurely Sunday morning brunches, but what happens when you add Champagne and a DJ? That hot little club that recently popped up on 10th Avenue SW, Bespoke, is hosting their first-ever Toast and Jam party on Sunday October 26th from noon until 2pm, and you’re invited. You and your most dedicated of breakfast buds will get to sip bubbly while taking in a delicious meal compliments of Calgary’s most popular caterer, Nicole Gourmet. But that’s not all. After brunch, DJ Thomas H will be getting the party started with some club hits that will make for a memorable Sunday. Brunch tickets are $45.
Happy Birthday to Bar C. This sweet little hangout turns two years old this week and if you haven’t been in lately, you might want to stop by. Beyond decking out the space with cool art, new furniture and an inventive cocktail list, this restaurant is also doing their part for charity this week. Until Sunday the 26th, Bar C will donate proceeds from each daily feature to a local charity of choice like Inn from the Cold and the Calgary Humane Society. So if you have to meet up with friends this weekend, why not do some good while ordering a cocktail? You’ll actually feel better about yourself in the morning.
Once you’ve had your fill of foodie events this weekend, why not take in a production called Butcher? While the play’s title may make you think about what you just consumed at the East Village, we can promise you this play has nothing to do with food. This story is focused on a mysterious old man who shows up in a police station and the perplexed detectives who are left to deal with the mystery behind his visit. This might be a good one to see before Halloween. Awarded the Governor General’s Award for Drama in 2013, this isn’t to be missed.
