Calgary Weekender: October 19 through 21, 2012

This weekend brings all kinds of things that should really make you step back and remember why Calgary is such a great city to live in.

Friday evening, we suggest checking out Cucina in Eighth Avenue Place. It’s only been open a week or so and already they hav created quite the buzz. Mingle with friends over a bottle of wine and charcuterie board.

After, why not head to the Jubilee Auditorium for the ballet production of Othello? Experience this epic production choreographed by Kirk Peterson and performed by the Alberta Ballet. This production builds on its namesake Shakespearean tragedy of love, jealousy, deceit, revenge and murder. With lavish sets and exotic costumes inspired by the vibrant colours of Africa, enjoy the pairing of Peterson’s highly theatrical and athletic choreography with the music of five-time Academy Award-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith. The rich layers of intent and desire guarantee an unforgettable evening.

Curious about the history of the city we call home? Saturday, why not head to the Calgary Public Library
(616 Macleod Trail SE) for Heritage Weekend, featuring an exciting array of authors, historians and educators who will illuminate the growing appetite to understand our city’s history. For program information, click here

More of a yogi YP? Saturday evening, you can be a part of a community-spirited event, Shimshai: A True Heart Celebration. This all ages event is in honour of music, art and yoga. Taking place at Endeavour Arts Gallery
(200 1209 1 St SW), the evening will feature California-based roots reggae and world fusion musician Shimshai and a “Journey into the Heart” yoga practice with Alice Hong.

Saturday evening also brings Calgarians the Runway Monthly 2012 Closing Event. Taking place in the Exchange Social Club (125 8 Ave SW), the evening will include runway shows by Rukhsana Nadeem, Pusch, MacKenzie Jones Featuring Danielle Cameron, Apt 22 and Salonska. There will also be a trunk sale featuring local company MissMartin Hosiery, free mini manicures by Bam Beaty Inc, and jewelry sold by Adorie Jewels. Doors open at 8pm.

Sunday, we suggest putting your health first. It’s Open Y Day, which happens every third Sunday of the month at all YMCA locations in Calgary. What does that mean? Well, you get free access to the facilities all day long. Swim a few laps, play a game of basketball, or use the cardio and strength equipment.
